Classified finishers per edition. The axis starts at zero, so the height of a point is the size of the field.

The winning time

Fastest finisher, over the same 42.195 km every year — so unlike a mountain race, these times are directly comparable.

The scale starts at 2:10:00, not zero — these are finishing times, and a clock plotted from zero is a flat line. Read the gaps between points, not their height above the axis.

Fastest of the archive: Nixon Machichim in 2015, 2:10:15 (3:05/km).

Where the timing breaks down

Not every edition supports every page. These are the ones whose data would not carry the analysis the others get, and what went wrong in each — stated here rather than left for a reader to infer from a missing table.

2014results only

Splits withheld: only 0.1% of finishers have an interval chain that telescopes to their finish time, so the published legs do not account for the course.

2015results only

Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed. Splits withheld: only 0.0% of finishers have an interval chain that telescopes to their finish time, so the published legs do not account for the course.

2016results only

Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed. Splits withheld: only 0.0% of finishers have an interval chain that telescopes to their finish time, so the published legs do not account for the course.

2017results only

Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed. Splits withheld: only 0.2% of finishers have an interval chain that telescopes to their finish time, so the published legs do not account for the course.

2018results only

Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed. Splits withheld: only 0.2% of finishers have an interval chain that telescopes to their finish time, so the published legs do not account for the course.

2021

The feed reports 41.195 km; the race is 42.195. Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed.

2023

Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed.

2024results only

No FINISH mat, so there is no final leg to close the chain. Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed. Splits withheld: only 0.0% of finishers have an interval chain that telescopes to their finish time, so the published legs do not account for the course.

2025

Finishers only: the entrant count IS the finisher count, so no abandon rate can be computed.

The clock changed

The editions from 2014 to 2016 are ranked on gun time — measured from the starter’s gun, however long a runner waited to reach the line. From 2017 the official classification switches to chip time.

It is not a detail. In a field this size the later pens cross the start line more than an hour after the gun, so the two clocks disagree by more than the gap between the median finisher and the top hundred. Each edition here is ranked the way its own results were published, established by testing which time field reproduces the provider’s own ordering — not by trusting the flag in the feed, which is honest on some editions and wrong on others.

Missing years

2013The 2013 edition ran a 10 km only; the marathon was added in 2014.
2020Cancelled — the pandemic.
2026Raced on 4 October 2026; no results published yet.

What this archive will not tell you

How many people abandoned. Every edition here lists classified finishers only — there are no DNF rows to count, so an abandon rate computed from these numbers would come out as zero for every year.

First names

Every first name in the archive

2,971 distinct first names over 28,799 named finishes, across 11 editions. The 260 most common are listed here.

One caution the page cannot repeat often enough: a median time attached to a name is an age chart wearing a disguise. Names go in and out of fashion, so a name popular thirty years ago belongs to people now thirty years older — worth far more minutes than anything about the name itself.

Read those two columns together. They are not a finding about names — they are the age structure of French given names, measured on a race course. The generations page shows what age actually costs here, which is the honest version of this table.

Who races it, by age

27,792 classified finishes across 11 editions, placed in the age band the organiser filed each athlete under. A further 1,007 carry no usable age class.

French athletics. The older Lyon editions use the ten-year V-bands, the newer ones the five-year M-bands.

The bands sum to the whole classified field each year, so this is composition — it says nothing about whether the race grew.

Is the mapping right?

The organiser’s class codes do not state their ages, so they are mapped — and the mapping is checked against this archive rather than taken on trust. If it were off by one class, anyone racing either side of a vocabulary change would appear to jump years in a single season.

Across 3,791 pairs of consecutive editions by the same person, the band moves backwards 16 times and skips more than one bucket 3 times — 99.5% consistent. The residue is the size name collisions predict.

Women in the archive

4,483 of 28,799 classified finishes across 11 editions — 15.6%.

The highest share is 2025 at 18.8%. The furthest up an overall field any woman has finished is Joan KIGEN, 5th overall in 2016.

“Median gap” is the women’s median finish minus the men’s in the same edition. It is a gap between two medians, not between two comparable athletes: the fields differ in size, depth and age structure.

How sure is “the same person”? These exports carry no athlete id, so one person across editions is a normalized name — accent- and case-folded, punctuation stripped, first and last name treated as interchangeable because the organiser swaps them between years. That merges different people who share a name, and the rate is measured rather than assumed: two finishers in the same race are certainly different humans, and 41 such collisions occur among 28,799 named finishes. Applied to every cross-edition pair that predicts roughly 350 merges that are two people rather than one. Read the repeat counts as an upper bound.

About this project and its data. The results are Sport Innovation / TimeTo’s — the official timekeeper of the event. They were fetched once after the event and republished here with segment times, recomputed leaderboards and a page per athlete that the official results do not offer. The timing is their work; the analysis is mine, and any mistake in it is mine too. Course details come from Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), the organiser. Each edition is ranked as its own official results were — gun time on the older years, chip time from 2019 — established per edition against the published ordering. Athletes who asked to be anonymous in the official results stay anonymous here. Names and bib numbers come from that public classification and nothing else; if one of them is yours and you would rather it were not here, ask me and I will take it off — the result stays as an anonymous line so the totals on this page remain correct.
