The scoreboard
Every restaurant the engines actually named, tallied across all five, EN + FR. The prompt panel is balanced (equal Argentinian and Spanish prompts), so the story is not how many mentions each side gets — it is how concentrated they are.

Every engine agrees: Spain diffuses
With balanced prompts, both sides draw roughly equal mention volume. But the number of distinct venues each engine reaches for is consistently higher for Spain — it spreads its bets, Argentina concentrates. This holds on all five engines, so it is an engine-wide pattern, not a one-model quirk.
*Google AI Mode: US-proxy only (see caveats).
Prompt by prompt
The same pattern, one level down. Argentina’s eight prompts funnel into the same few venues (74 distinct across the whole arm); Spain’s spread over 119. And the moment a prompt goes dish-first (“best tapas”, “where to watch the final”), grounding drops — the engines improvise more when the cuisine anchor weakens.

Argentina is more grounded, too
We matched every named venue back to a registry of 81 real Paris restaurants (42 Argentinian, 39 Spanish) seeded from Google Maps using only cuisine-specific categories. Result: 79% of Argentine mentions resolve to a real venue, vs 63% of Spanish mentions. That 63% is a floor — exact matching only, and the registry deliberately excludes generically-labelled venues — but the gap is consistent: the AIs are shakier about Spain’s Paris scene than Argentina’s. They not only prefer Argentina, they hallucinate it less.

Two things we didn’t expect
The map widget lies
ChatGPT’s structured map widget crowned Bistro Caminito as the #1 Argentinian pick (33 map appearances). But across the engines’ actual prose, Caminito is only #8 — the real consensus is LOCO and Santa Carne. What an AI plots on a map is not what it tells you in words. If you optimise for one, you can lose the other.
Argentina invades the Spanish results
Ranked #6 in the Spanish arm, named by all five engines: “Rosario” — which is, of course, an Argentine city (and Messi’s hometown). Even Spain’s list can’t keep Argentina out. (A little French bleed shows up too — generic bistros like Les Piétons and Les Caves slip into both arms; an entity-recognition caveat on any leaderboard like this.)
The 20 prompts, and what each one did
The full panel, with per-prompt results. Every prompt was fired in English and French, 18 captures each (5 engines × US + FR proxy × EN + FR, minus the two rejected AI Mode × FR-proxy slots). Two patterns jump out. Dish prompts are hallucination bait: ask for a restaurant and 79–91% of named venues are real; ask for a dish and grounding collapses (tapas 40%, empanadas 48%, jamón 62%) as the engines reach for delis, chains and phantom spots. And “where to watch the final” scatters hardest — 52 and 66 distinct venues, with the Spanish watch-party prompt bottoming out at 32% real: that’s sports-bar territory, not restaurant territory.
By prompt family

| ⚽ World-Cup hook | 4 | 373 | 138 | 61% | Santa Carne / LOCO (22) |
Same volume in, very different behaviour out: the two arms drew near-identical mention counts (799 vs 834 — the panel is balanced, as designed), but Spain’s spread across 119 distinct venues to Argentina’s 74. The four World-Cup prompts are the wildest of all: 138 distinct venues from just 373 mentions.

Mentions = recommended-venue mentions extracted from answer prose (EN + FR combined). % real = share matching the 81-venue registry by exact name/alias — a conservative floor. The side-level 79% / 63% figures above group the World-Cup prompts with their side; here they are broken out as their own family. † Real Paris venue, but outside the cuisine-specific registry (Google files Clásico Argentino and Bellota Bellota under other categories).
One more football note: LOCO tops six of Argentina’s ten prompts — a true number 9. Bodega Potxolo also tops six for Spain, but with visibly smaller margins, and the moment the prompt names a dish, the crown moves (La Paella for paella, Bellota Bellota for jamón, Buenas for groups). Argentina has a striker; Spain rotates the captain’s armband.
How we ran it
- Panel: 20 templates — matched Argentinian and Spanish arms (control + steak/asado/empanadas/malbec, tapas/paella/jamón/rioja) plus a World-Cup hook — in English and French. Full list with per-prompt results above.
- Engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Mode, each on a US and a FR proxy. 360 captures.
- Mentions: restaurant names extracted from each answer with a named-entity-recognition pipeline — 2,006 mentions.
- Registry: 81 real venues seeded from Apify Google Maps using only the cuisine-specific categories (Argentinian / Spanish / tapas / Latin-American) — deliberately no generic “Restaurant”, to keep the head-to-head clean.
